For Educators

Why is Career Education Important?

A primary function of secondary education is to prepare students for life after graduation. It is the role of the teachers, counselors, and administrators to provide the essential guidance that creates a bridge between student education and future careers. This guidance takes place in career education courses. One of the responsibilities of career education is to help students meet and exceed the Pennsylvania Career Education and Work Standards. These standards address four areas of knowledge:

  • Career Awareness and Preparation
  • Career Acquisition
  • Career Retention and Advancement
  • Entrepreneurship

Career education is vital to student success. It provides students with the skills, knowledge, and encouragement to get the most out of desired career paths. Career education also helps to direct students’ focus so they can make informed choices about their future and careers. Students display higher levels of engagement and motivation when they have a clear understanding of their future.
